Gaining new subscribers through social media contesting

Hi, we are a digital newspaper looking to grow our newsletter subscriber base. We were thinking of doing a ticket giveaway on social media and only opening it to new subscribers to incentivize people to subscribe in order for a chance to win. Has anyone had success with this or a similar tactic, or can provide tips?
