Scheduling blocks

Very interesting idea. I can't think of how we'd use it right now though, can you give some examples?

One example is our Athlete of the Week.  I have an HTML block that I put on our homepage every Tuesday morning and then take back down at the end of the day.  

If you could schedule things generally, like this being on Tuesdays, but you could maybe also make it have specific options.

If we are running a contest from the 1st through the 15th, I could make a block that showcases that specifically during those dates and then automatically comes down.

Are you aware of our layout scheduling feature? It can do what you're looking for... the only downside is that it is a schedule for the whole page, not just one block. So, if you change something on one page, like add a new circulation block, you have to change it in both layouts so they are in sync.

Yeah, I've messed with that a bit, but it's the whole page layout that I'm trying to avoid.  Thinking of the convenience of the single block schedule.

As we approach the next election date here this idea is even more appealing. I'd love to be able to schedule a block to go online at 5 PM and automatically turn off at 2 AM for instance.

One way we would use it is for high school sports scores.  We want the block to show up on Fridays at 7 and disappear on Saturdays at noon. I would also like for my centerpiece news block to turn off on Fridays at 2 and turn back on Saturday at 5 am so I can program entertainment to the front of my site on Friday afternoons.

This kind of departing and weekly scheduled programming is very hard to do when you have to do it all manually.
If I could schedule blocks to turn on and off at certain times, then all I have to do is train the desk to slot the stories. I can schedule the rest myself.  Better yet, I can set a weekly schedule and let it run.

Scheduling of blocks would be very useful to those of us who strive to have a very dynamic and dayparted site that shows readers something dramatically different depending upon what traffic tells us they are looking for without someone sitting literally at 3:58 p.m. and then at 5 a.m. rearranging the site.

Our previous CMS allowed us to schedule elements throughout the site.  Very helpful for things like Friday night football, regularly scheduled live newscasts, and even weekend "out and about" sections that need to be removed Sunday nights.

Please consider adding this feature to the CMS!

When you create a new schedule, it starts with the existing page, and then you can just move/add one or two new blocks. Those block changes would happen just during the specific time frame.

I think that this would meet the needs of most of the use cases provided.

We've considered using scheduled pages, but it would mean that everytime we update our home page with a new block or make changes to the layout, we would need to make changes to two different pages.  And that would be true for any section for which we may wish to use the schedule (sports, entertainment, etc).  Too cumbersome to keep track of since we frequently make changes and updates.

Much easier to schedule individual components (blocks) on those pages.

On our previous site, we had many items scheduled:

- 3 different Friday night football links:  Tonight at 11, Watch Now, Watch Highlights

- Inside your Town:  Long form articles about town and schoolboard meetings (only showed up Tue - Sat)

- Out and About: Upcoming weekend events (visible Thur - Sun)

- History's Headlines: weekly local history feature (only weekends)

We also schedule contests and promotions that have a limited lifespan and used schedules to automatically remove them.

We would also like to have a block to link to our live newscasts (Watch Now) appear only during newscast times.

This would be a highly useful option for us, especially on the homepage. I don't think having multiple pages designed as the homepage is the best option but the ability to have blocks on the homepage time out and disappear would be extremely helpful.

We (in IT) would also benefit from this feature. We run a ScoreStream widget on our landing pages which we enable every Friday afternoon and have to remember to log in every Sunday morning and turn it off. We also had a need for it during 2018 elections and we have another BIG one coming up next year. 

I agree with Eric R. Way too cumbersome, and time consuming to manually keep those pages in sync. 

I agree. We have several blocks that would work wonders with scheduling.
